TIP: If you need the text on this page to be bigger then hold down the Ctrl key (bottom left of your keyboard) and then at the same time spin the wheel (between the two buttons) on your mouse away from you. Spinning the wheel towards you will make the text smaller. This technique is called zooming in and out. It works on most web pages. Spinning the wheel without the Ctrl key will make this page move up and down. Try it and you'll see what we mean. There you go; you've learned something already and haven't even joined a class yet!

Welcome..........to a different style of teaching
For three years now we have been delivering a different kind of computing class within South Lanarkshire Libraries. Over two thousand people (who had never previously even switched a computer on), are now using their PCs for a wide range of tasks. They are sending and receiving emails, often with photos attached to them. Many are also now writing and printing their own documents; creating spreadsheets; printing mailing merge labels for their Christmas card lists; using webcams to see and talk to friends and relatives (for free!) all over the world. These are just a few of the tasks they can now perform.

Additionally, a significant number are now regularly using their digital cameras and mp3 players with their computers. After taking pictures, loading them into the computer our students can now turn them into movie slide shows, with music and titles. These things might sound complicated to you right now but as folks keep hearing in our classes, "none of this is rocket science!"

There are reasons why people keep coming back for more of our courses. The main reason though, is we do things differently. For example;
  • we never throw you in at the deep end and hope you won't drown in an information overload!
  • we don't use complicated terminology; everything is explained in simple laymans terms.
  • we take the time to slowly expand your knowledge and abilities.
  • we happily repeat ourselves, often.
  • we encourage students to ask questions as often as they like.
  • we provide a web site for every class (which of course, we teach you how to use!). They usually contain short movies of lessons you did in class. You can view them as often as you like.
  • we always keep class sizes small. No more than 12 students in a class
  • every tutor has a sense of humour and isn't afraid to use it!
  • Did I mention we will repeat ourselves? We like to make sure the topic is sinking in.
All we need from you is a promise to practice a little each week between classes. It's that simple. If you need more convincing that you too could learn to use a computer then hear directly from those who have already done it...

Courses.....which one is right for you?
From mid April 2010 onwards we are planning to offer a total of nine different course topics. They basically fall into three distinct categories. There are 3 First Steps courses, 3 Next Steps and 3 LearnMORE courses. Think as First Steps being for beginners, Next Steps as an intermediate, and LearnMORE as advanced topics.  Absolute beginners should sign up for First Steps in IT. If you already use a computer a bit but don't know anything aobut the internet or email you should perhaps be looking at First Steps on the Web. If you are already up and running on the net and are happy you know the basics, then take a look at the First Steps Media course. You can browse much more information on the Courses pages...
